Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of mind in which your conscious mind (the rational, analytical part) is allowed to become passive. In this state the Subconscious Mind can accept suggestions for the changes you want.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses the state of Hypnosis to communicate with your Subconscious Mind and to facilitate change at the Subconscious level. All problems, behaviour and change happen at the Subconscious level which makes Hypnotherapy the most effective therapy available today.
Will I be unconscious or asleep?
No, Hypnosis is not sleep. Sleep is a word that hypnotists use but in the context of a Hypnosis session it means go deeply relaxed. In the hypnotic state you are aware at all times - in fact your awareness is heightened, but more directed.
Can a Hypnotist control me?
Absolutely not. In order for the suggestions that a hypnotist gives you to take effect they have to be acceptable to you. If a suggestion went against your beliefs, values or morals then that suggestion would immediately be rejected by you. In the hypnotic state you retain full control. Hypnotherapy is a process of co-operation.
I don't think I can be hypnotised. How can I be sure it will work for me?
Anyone of normal intelligence can be hypnotised providing the following conditions have been satisfied.
- You must want to be hypnotised. No-one can hypnotise you against your will. Hypnosis is a 100% consent state.
- You must not have any fears or misconceptions about Hypnosis.
These points are covered completely before the Hypnosis part of the session begins.
Do you use tapes in your sessions?
Absolutely not. No two clients are the same and all sessions involve my full personal participation. In my view hypnotherapists that leave clients in a room with the session on a tape are unprofessional and unethical.
If I am taking anti-depressant medication will it affect the hypnotherapy?
In a hypnotherapy session we are working with the emotional feeling level mind that is your Subconscious Mind. I usually advise clients to get their doctor's permission to stay off anti-depressants for 24-48 hours before a session. Please note that your doctor's permission is required.
How many sessions will I need?
Apart from the Quit Smoking therapy which requires one session, the number of sessions required varies from individual to individual. In my experience it is unusual for any specific problem to take more than a few sessions. After your initial consultation you will be given an estimation of the number of sessions required.
